Camille Pissarro’s ‘Boulevard des Italiens, Morning, Sunlight’ (1897)

This painting  by depicts a bustling, tree-lined avenue filled with buildings, people, and horse-drawn carriages. Dominated by warm browns, sage green, slate blue, and brick red, the scene is loosely painted with dotted brushstrokes, leaving details indistinct. The street stretches diagonally from the lower left, flanked by gray sidewalks lined with slender, sparsely leafed trees. Pedestrians in coats and hats stroll in small groups, while horse-drawn carriages and omnibuses move along the road. Two brick-red hexagonal kiosks sit across from each other midway along the boulevard. Sunlight filters through, casting dappled light. The painting is signed and dated in the lower right: “C. Pissarro. 97.”
