Camille Pissarro’s ‘Landscape at Les Pâtis, Pontoise’ (1868)

In a painting by Camille Pissarro, a small cluster of white buildings with red-tile roofs nestles among lush green farm fields on rolling hills. The sunlit scene is loosely painted in shades of green, caramel, and sand brown, with the horizon set three-quarters up and white clouds in a pale blue sky. Tiny figures walk paths or work in the fields, while a man in a straw hat and overalls walks away in the lower left. Another figure, possibly a woman, stands near a fence. The artist signed and dated it in the lower right: “C. Pissarro. 68.”
